High Cholesterol? Don’t Eat These!
There are so many “do’s” to keep in mind when you’re battling high cholesterol. DO try and lose weight if you’re overweight. DO eat whole grains. DO eat omega-3 fatty acids. DO exercise. DO try and lower your LDL (bad) cholesterol levels by taking a cholesterol lowering medication like Lipitor or Zocor (available at your online pharmacy at a discounted price).
But what about the “don’ts” of high cholesterol? Well, turns out there’s only one “don’t”…but it’s a biggie: Don’t eat foods that contain high levels of cholesterol. Simple, right? But this list is longer than you think. Use this list of high-cholesterol foods as guide for shopping, dining out, or ordering in, of foods that you should try your hardest to steer clear of if you’re trying to lower your cholesterol.
• Butter
• Cream
• Whole milk
• Cream cheese
• Shrimp
• Duck
• Lamb chops
• Steak
• Deli meats
• Veal
• Egg yolks
• Caviar
• Organ meats (like brains, sweetbreads, kidneys, or liver)
Of course you’ll also want to avoid foods that are high in saturated fat, which puts a double no-no on whole milk dairy products and fatty or processed meats. It also means that you should avoid fried foods.
Worried that there’s nothing left for you to eat? Don’t be silly! Enjoy these foods, plus as much fruits, vegetables, and whole grains as you’d like (within reason, of course):
• Walnuts, almonds, sunflower seeds
• Fish
• Avocados
• Olive oil
• Low fat yogurt, especially if it’s fortified with plant sterols.
• Steel cut oatmeal
• Lean cuts of meat (in moderation) and lean poultry
• Egg whites
Get creative eating low cholesterol. It can be fun to discover new recipes and find foods that you never knew you liked!
